How we started
1972The company's roots go back to 1972 when after an apprenticeship in Ireland and 2 years working in tool and die design in South Africa, Billy Warke returned to Ireland and with his father set up what became the family business, Coleraine Lawnmower Services.

The Early Days
1987A further 10 years of oil-field manufacturing experience in Canada and some 15 years after the family business was born, Billy Warke returned again to Ireland ready to face some new challenges.
CLS equipment hire company was set up in 1987 and operated alongside Coleraine Lawnmower Services initially specialising in Landscape and Garden equipment. The new company exhibited later that year at the local Coleraine Show. Customer demand led to the research and development of a professional turf aerator capable of withstanding the rigors or hire at an affordable price.

Research & Development
The original prototype
The research and development project quickly established that the Aerator would need to be crank driven to provide sufficient penetration on compacted surfaces, this led to the crank driven elliptical plunge action design. The first working prototype was completed in 1998 and is shown being loaded for testing on various surfaces and soil conditions. .

Groundsman Industries Established
1990
The first production Groundsman Turf Aerator
Following successful tests and the sale of a machine to a local hire shop in 1989, Groundsman Industries Ltd was established in 1990 and the Groundsman 345MD went into production.
The Turf Multi Cutter range follows
Due to early success with the pedestrian aerator, the range expanded followed by tractor mounting aerators and the Flexblade Core Collector. The Turf Multi Cutter range followed and it was not long before larger premises were found to increase production output.

New Factory and Computerised Design
2003
The expanded product range meant that a further expansion in working area was required. In 2003 Groundsman Industries relocated to the current factory which has 16,000 sq ft of working space with plenty of room for future expansion.
The trusty drawing board was replaced by a Computer Aided 3D Design system (CAD) marking a new era in product development, a worthy reason for the Groundsman team to celebrate that Christmas as Billy raises his glass.

Computerised Machining
2020
Factory floor production moved up a gear with the introduction of Computer Numerally Controlled (CNC) milling and turning machines.

Where we are now
2025
Computer Aided Machining (CAM) software system work station is introduced to write the programmes to enable the Computer Numerally Controlled (CNC) machines to manufacture the parts that have been designed using the Computer Aided Drawings (CAD) software. This represents another mile stone to the journey of Groundsman Industries enabling faster prototyping and more efficient production of the GROUNDSMAN product range.
A new mobile phone friendly website has also been developed and is about to go live, it will assist the introduction of Groundsman products to customers around the world. Our journey and goals are ongoing and we encourage our dealers and end users to assist us in that journey by contacting us via the ‘SEND YOUR FEEDBACK’ section in this new website.
